When is it time to cut your losses... Submitted by zshopgirl

When did people learn that if they employ your services they have the right to own you day and night and treat you like crap? I had a client blow up at me today because their phone company put their telephone lines in and they don't work (voice over IP). This is a solution I didn't recommend (I'm the network vendor), nor one I thought was a good idea, but suddenly it is my fault because I was in the meeting. The customer was adamant that I'd recommended and approved this solution.

I have many clients who hear what they want, but they do listen to me as the expert when I make a recommendation. This was different and I'm angry and frustrated. I think, although I might be wrong, that men learn that some situations are bad at the start and it's best to leave impossible situations (clients with unrealistic expectations) behind. Why don't women learn this? Every woman I know has complained from time to time that they keep trying to fix it until the plug gets pulled on them. Is there comfort in pulling the plug first?

Ah yes, my favourite kind of client. The ones who are never wrong, it is always someone else who is accountable. You seemed like the easiest target and voila, you're to blame. I always take it way too personally, but I have to remember it's business. (Easier said than done of course.) I figure there are always going to be crappy clients like this and if I can work with the majority who are great, I can bear the few that aren't (or so I tell myself). I just hope that you have a good ratio of good to not so good to keep your sanity!

I have one word to perhaps be of some help here.

A notepad for jotting down notes goes a long way here. If you don't like to scribble, then invest in a digital recorder, they are easily available and quite inexpensive now.

Evidence is one sure way to prevent yourself from ever getting into these kinds of situations again.
