Cellphones & Emergency outages! Submitted by marie

Isn't a cell phone for an emergency? So, yesterday, during the record rains, and floods, when everything was messed up and running late, the cell network goes out!

Verizon just broke down! No calls were going through, either direction. It spread like a cancer, first one phone, then over about 2 hours, all the phones we had (about 4 different numbers). It was a good 4+ hours before things started to come back.

The rant: They tell you the phone is for an emergency. They tell you you can depend on the service when you are in trouble. So, trouble happens, and they go down.

They should really make it known their network is also subject to failure, and just because you have a charged battery, and are in a "hot" zone, even getting a 1x connection notice, you may not be able to make -- or get -- calls.

When you rely on this technology to keep you in touch with people who depend on you -- like your kids -- to find it crapping out when needed most, scary!

What a day. When your "life line" goes out, and you are really floating on your own.

Ouch! I feel your pain. During the last month my cell phone's been out at least two weeks because of towers down during the hurricanes.

In Florida it was Cingular that crashed and Verizon actually held up, but funny note; my Verizon phone works great in Central Florida until I go to Tampa (where Verizon is headquartered) and then zip, nothing, nada. They don't really know why that happens either.

The truth we are learning is that all "emergency" plans must also have a contingency because nothing is guaranteed when the rains and wind come along.
