Abstract: An honest comedy about a forgotten daughter, a fatally ill mother, and a family reunion one Thanksgiving day.
A character driven story about a rebellious daughter, April, played by Katie Holmes who attempts, for the very first time, to hold a Thanksgiving dinner for her terminally ill mother, played by Patricia Clarkson, and her family.
Described as the daughter from hell, April and her boyfriend, Bobby undertake the complicated task of preparing their first turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. With the help of her eclectic neighbors, the true nature of each character is revealed.
Although seemingly a simple storyline, this film is based heavily on the complicated and often misunderstood lives of its characters. It is a movie that will show the beauty and strength of people, and the nature of forgiveness, love, and acceptance.
A bittersweet film with humour and tears that are honestly earned by telling a true to life story with characters who do not linger on sentiment. Patricia Clarkson gives that performance here which has earned her an Acadamy Awards Nomination for Best Supporting Actress. I highly recommend this film for those looking for a uniquely told story that reminds us of the ugliness and the subtle beauty and goodness in life and in us all.
