Abstract: Diane Lane delves into the trials of internet dating
Diane Lane plays preschool teacher Sarah Nolan. Recently divorced, her family has decided to intervene in her love life and give her a "gentle-ish" nudge to get back into the dating game. One relative tries to set her up with a cousin while her brother gives her phone numbers of work colleagues, mostly married men in search of affairs. Her sister Carol (Elizabeth Perkins) takes it a step further and signs up her profile on an internet dating site. And as expected, we are entertained with a variety of reject date encounters.
On the other side, broken hearted Jake Anderson (John Cusack), has just finalized his divorce. He's too cynical to want to try again but his sleazy (but well intended) lawyer tries to push him in the right direction and finds him an online date.
This movie was just as advertised. Clever and funny dialogue with delightful characters - in a fairly standard romantic comedy format. Beautiful girl looking for a soul mate, charming guy looking for the same; mix, add a touch of conflict and there you have it. It felt like a comfort food movie for the thirty something crowd. I adore John Cusack and who cannot love Diane Lane? These two have a very tangible chemistry that makes this movie so sweet. The sharp banter back and forth, especially Jake's rapid quips, makes this film especially entertaining.
I did find it of course unrealistic that anyone as quirky, fun and stunning as Diane Lane's character would ever have trouble finding a date - but then I realized, she didn't have trouble finding a date, the difficulty lay in finding one that was worth finding.
I especially appreciated the subtleness of the humor - of course there were some "in your face" style punch lines - but in general it was witty and fun. There were laugh-out-loud moments, which to me is reason enough to go see any movie. If you don't catch it in the theatre, definitely watch it on DVD. Besides, did I mention that it stars John Cusack?
