Monster-in-Law
Abstract: The Bitch is back!!
OK, so Jane Fonda isn't necessarily a bitch, but she is back after a 15-year absence from the big screen, and she most assuredly plays a bitch in Monster-In-Law.
Squaring off against mega-star Jennifer Lopez, Fonda is deliciously malicious as Viola Fields, a larger than life TV interviewer. Lopez fares less well here, being unable to sell us on the girl-next-door persona she's attempting, draining much of the comedy from the head-to-head set pieces with her soon to be relation. Michael Vartan plays Kevin, son and fiance to our heroines, and as empty a plot stooge as I've ever seen.
Unfortunately, though Fonda is a bright spot, the movie suffers from an overly formulaic romantic comedy plot, and a dearth of humour. It's time for Jennifer Lopez to put her considerable talents to more substantive projects. But let's hope Fonda's comeback hearlds many more such performances in future.
