Abstract: Fourth installment of the genre-inventing zombie series

Don't get me wrong, I love George Romero and zombie movies, but Land of the Dead just doesn't stack up to his earlier work in the genre. The film is not as creepy as Night of the Living Dead, and doesn't exhibit the same deliciously deadly-accurate social parody as Dawn of the Dead. While clever and gruesome, the film doesn't seem to go anywhere new; even last year's remake of Dawn of the Dead felt more original. An attempt at social commentary on class-systems fell a little short, in my opinion.

Thousands of survivors of the Zombie apocalypse have holed themselves up in a corner of a large city, bordered by water on three sides, and an electrified fence on the other, having cleared out all of the walking undead from their little paradise. The city's most powerful man is Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) who has created a new class system based upon membership to his sumptuous hi-rise complex called Fiddler's Green. The building is the only one in town that features power, and is fully stocked with amenities, looted from neighboring zombie-invested communities.

Some snappy humor, classic Romero-esque gore, and good performances make the film worth watching.

Romero rocks! The master of zombie flicks strikes again with a fantastic imaging of a the 'Day After' the initial shock of a zombie infestation.

I'll rate this one above 28 Days Later (Another great movie), but just below The Dawn of the Dead.
