Abstract: The simplest concept can be so powerful.
How different would our lives have turned out if we'd made different choices? Would we be living in Paris visiting our favorite cafes for a super strong double-shot espresso and biscotti rather than a Super Wal-Mart for a BigMac combo?
Julie Delpy is simply luminous in this movie, the shots of her on the park bench were extremely flattering. Her efusive personality shone through in this movie, unfettered by typical movie making cuts and restarts.
Shot in long takes as the two main stars walk around some charming streets in Paris, this movie is a revelation. It made me feel like a voyeur listening in on a private conversation. The format allows for the actors to put more into the film than just regurgitating a script and you can really feel the tension in the air sometimes when they get to a point where there is a little dead space.
Ethan Hawke with his chiseled jawline is quite convincing as an author, that little goatee of his is questionable though in my mind. However, the two of them are a great pair and should come back in another 9 years to release a what happened after the fade-out movie.
Here's wishing all of us might one day be able to see what actually transpires in our own lives if the "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda" actually DID happen.
