Abstract: Set in New York City, this love story written and directed by Woody Allen, revolves around an older artist and his complicated love affair with his young protégé.
By the look of the movie poster, this film would seem like some cheap Hollywood B-rated teen chick flick. But I was pleasantly surprised to find Woody Allen's name not only on the cast of this quirky and tragic love affair, but writer and director of this little gem of a film.
Some critics say this has been one of the most smoothly executed films by Allen. My opinion of it is that it is a brilliantly written screenplay with characters that jump down your throats. Atypical would be the best word to describe the love affair between Jerry Falk, played by Jason Biggs, and Amanda, played by Christina Ricci. But the true story revolves around the idiosyncratic relationship between Jerry and Dobel, played by Allen himself.
Through offbeat and often verbose philosophies, Dobel teaches Jerry lessons on life and love. But as complicated and strange as life is, in the end, things are like... anything else.
Ingeniously written with canny and often offbeat humour, this film is perfect for those looking for something different with an intellectual spin.
