MILITARY STYLE: NOT JUST CAMOUFLAGE
Military style is especially big for coats, but this look has also conquered clothing, hats, and boots. Upon first hearing about this new craze, I figured the pieces would be very hard and cold. No need to go MIA, as I was oh so wrong! Granted, most pieces are tailored, but the great thing about this trend is that it adds some very cool detailing and gives your overall look some polish. It’s definitely not a shy or romantic look. Bold, strong, and confident are better words to describe this pervasive trend – get ready to be noticed.
SLEEK AND FITTED LOOK
Coats are generally knee-length winter wool coats or waist-cropped thick cotton fall numbers – almost all are beautifully fitted. To keep the tailored look of the coats and jackets crisp and sleek, don’t wear bulky pieces underneath. Form-fitting pants and jeans, or slim dresses are best with the long coats.
There is more leeway with the waist-length jackets – a tight top with a flared or even full skirt look fabulous with these waist nippers. I’ve noticed that most of the designers pair their jackets with a skirt that is fitted around the tummy and hips but full otherwise. The H&M knee-length coat shown is a lovely knock-off of the incredibly popular Michael Kors original. Both are stunning, the final decision when deciding between the two will rest with your wallet.
WHERE TO FIND 'EM
Your mission: break ranks and go to your nearest H&M, Mango, Zara, Bebe, or Mexx to find the best in coats that would have Napoleon drooling. Designers Pink Tartan (Cdn.), Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and Yves St. Laurent also have wonderful pieces available.
