IT'S ALL BLACK Don’t I know it - every year around this time of year comes the perennial cry of: “Black is back!” Shuddup already, right?!
This season, I kid you not - obsidian, ebony, jet, onyx or whatever you want to call it, has taken over as THE hot color to wear. And don’t be fooled, there’s no: “Throw on a great black skirt and a kicky purple too” here. We’re talking black: black shoes, black bottoms, black top, black coat, black, black, black….
MONOCHROME MANIA
Though many of you (OK, me too) will rejoice in the triumphant return of this most slimming color, others will feel that too much black can be unimaginative and boring – reducing us all to…wait for it…black sheep. But fear not; though black is monochrome, the silhouettes, fabrics, and accoutrements associated with the color are endless. Agreed, black in fashion does trend towards dressy & business attire, so let’s talk about it in those terms.

KEEP IT BALANCED
With simple lines and classic shapes, black is perfect for the office – it doesn’t easily show marks, it embodies strength, it’s slimming, and is easy to mix and match. As eveningwear, black can be dressed down for a nice dinner or dressed up for a formal affair simply by changing a few accessories and touching up hair and make-up. Low heels, high heels, boots, and ballet flats are classic but stylish in black as are coats of every description – military, peacoat, trench, bomber, and vintage. To keep an all black outfit from becoming too severe, keep make-up fresh, light and pretty. Also, keep hair loose or in a deconstructed up-do. Trying pieces in different fabrics with various textures and degrees of lightness or heaviness is an easy way to keep the fun in black. The color is, in turns, mysterious, sexy, striking, bold, classic, and have I mentioned this yet: slimming.
IT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE
Almost everyone can wear all black but there are a few who should avoid this look. Ladies of a retiring age often look fresher and more energetic in bright colors, but again, there are exceptions to every rule. A good tip for women of any age from high school up (unless the goth scene is your rebellious grade 10 statement!), is to wear a black top with regular makeup in daylight to check to see if you look drained, drawn or washed out in any way. Some women’s coloring just doesn’t work well with an all-black ensemble, and the simple fix is to be sure to wear colorful accessories near your face to brighten up your skin.
Now is the time to grab some pieces in this classic, sexy, slimming color, as it will soon to be ousted by the impending approach of Spring. But for now, ‘Black is the new black’.
