| Bermuda Shorts |
| Ya mon! Take it eeeeasy. Just returning home from attending a wedding in Bermuda has me thinking about how we (as North Americans) have borrowed from the Bermudian official uniform of: short-sleeved dress shirt, Bermuda shorts, knee-length socks, and closed toe lace-ups. I realize this description is not conjuring up appealing mental images (believe me, it wasn’t pretty), but rest assured that the cutest and most forgiving piece of clothing to hit summer in many a season is the Bermuda short. |

WHY THEY WORK
They’re those slash pocket, flat front, and partially tailored shorts hitting the leg anywhere from the upper thigh to just above the knee. You can cuff ‘em or not, depending on how long/short or skinny/shapely your legs are. Girls with legs on the stickish side (like me) should keep to shorts that are more fitted and have cuffing capability. Gals with very shapely and/or petite in length gams should avoid a cuff as it shortens and widens the leg. Bermuda shorts hide those dimpled areas, show off cute knees, and keep the tummy flat and hips curvy, not chubby.
VERSATILITY MON!
Bermudas look great in a variety of fabrics and patterns depending on the look you’re after. They’re ‘sweet’ with a cropped eyelet top; ‘surfer’ with a bright, sporty tank; ‘business’ with an elbow length jacket and shell; ‘out on the town’ with a sequined tube top and oversized funky bag; and ‘comfy/casual’ with any vintage t-shirt and baseball cap. They’re huge for summer and will be sneaking into fall in heavier fabrics mixed with lace, velvet jackets, tweed, and short-sleeved sweaters.
FOOTWEAR FOLLY
The main pitfall in putting together a bermuda shorts outfit is your choice of footwear. Avoid really clunky shoes as the combination of bermuda shorts and heavy footwear can really widen and shorten your legs. Keep away from ‘barely there’ strappy stilettos as the slight bulkiness of the shorts outweighs a petite shoe. Ballet flats, princess heels, flip flops, clogs, most business shoes, etc. all look great – depending on the look you’re after.
WHERE TO GET ‘EM
Old Navy, Banana Republic, Kenneth Cole, H&M, Mango, The Bay, and The Gap all carry fabulous bermuda shorts. Just don’t get lost in the triangle!
